Wayne Helliwell Jr
Fans have spoken...
Dover, New Hampshire driver Wayne Helliwell Jr. has been voted the 2012 Vermont Motorsport's Magazine Driver of the Year. The two week online annual poll consisted of 11 categories covering all forms of Northeast short track racing. Drivers from sprint cars to late models to four cylinder's were recognized for the their achievements in 2012. Over 23,000 votes were cast by fans across the region.
Helliwell who was nominated for three of the categories received over 30% of the votes in each; winning "Touring Series Driver of the Year" "Late Model Driver of the Year" and the top honor "Vermont Motorsport's Magazine Driver of the Year".
Managing editor for the site TJ Ingerson echoed the the thoughts of the fans,"we congratulate Wayne on an outstanding season. He is more than deserving to be recognized as VMM Driver of the Year."
Piloting cars for Bruce Bernhardt Motorsports and Ed & Bobby Witkum Racing Helliwell took home 22 wins, 40 top 5's and 46 top 10's in 50 starts. Those results netted him the American Canadian Tour Championship, NASCAR Whelen All-American New Hampshire State Championship, Canaan Fair Speedway Late Model Championship and the Ford Blue Oval Challenge Championship. He was also runner up in Lee USA Speedway small block supermodifed division.
Helliwell who was humbled by the outcome was thankful for the support shown by the fans. "The support of everyone has been just amazing. TJ [Ingerson] and Ricky [St.Clair] do a great job with Vermont Motor Mag. The coverage and recognition they bring to the racing and racers in New England is fantastic. For this to be a fan vote and people to take their personal time to vote is unbelievable. Everyone in these categories deserves recognition. I can't thank everyone enough...
