A third at Airborne

Round #4 of the American Canadian Tour rolled in the Champlain Valley of upstate New York and the Airborne Speedway. Wayne Helliwell Jr. looked to continue his winning ways at the Plattsburgh, NY track that earned him the 2012 ACT Championship.

Helliwell would take +2 from his heat race to put the EKeys-4-Cars, Unique Ford Fusion in the 4th starting position for the 100 lap feature event.

The 27NH would follow young gun Jimmy Hebert on the outside lane at the drop of the green flag. Hebert to the lead Helliwell would ride in the 58VT tire tracks in till the frist yellow flag on lap 54. On the restart Helliwell would rocket from the top of the track to grab the lead. A lead he would keep for only one lap as the yellow would fly again.

On the next restart Helliwell would lose the lead as field headed into turn 1. He was heard over the team radio saying the caution light was still on. The light quickly switched from yellow to green as he found himself in a three wide battle for the lead. Helliwell decided better of the situation and let the 58 of Hebert and the 37 of Hoar go. " That light came on or wasn't turned off yet and i lifted just for a few; they jumped all over me. I just let them go, he said. There was no reason to continue like that with so many laps left."

Fighting a more favorable outside lane Helliwell would battle hard on the bottom after each caution flag. With a hand full of laps left he would drive under fellow Welded Media driver Ray Parent as two battled for the final podium postion. Helliwell would take the advantage at the checkers by a fender and secure the 3rd position.

A dejected Helliwell was not happy with the 3rd place outcome; taking the blame for giving the lead back. A lead he felt he could have held. "We were better than 3rd tonight. Brian [Hoar] had better forward bight off the turns but it would have been close i think… It's a top 3 but not a happy one," he finshed.

The Team now turns its attention to round #5 of the ACT Series at the high banks of Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH. Marking the return of the Tour in a number of years, the track was the site of a $5,000 victory for the Bernhardt Motorsports team in 2009. They will look to continue the string of consistency as they havent finished worse than 4th in the last three events.
